Analysis of sound in thrillers

Analysis of sound in thrillers:

The analysis was based on the film ‘Law abiding citizen’ and looking at the use of sound the film creates.

The film contains a lot of use for diegetic sounds. This is used because it creates realism to the audience and gives the effect of the audience being in the film. The non-diegetic sounds used consist of slow paced music to create lots of tension and fear towards the audience. Law Abiding Citizen creates a lot of tension so minimalizing the amount of music used in certain scenes is key. The music is only to build up and to scare the audience at certain scenes as this is typically used in thrillers since the soundtrack increases in pitch and tempo. The sound effects used consist of weapons such as shooting guns to make the scenes realistic and to fright the audience as a gunshot is very fast and scares the audience if it out of nowhere. There’s a lot of dialogue used throughout the film to set the scene and to give the audience any information about the plot of the film they don’t understand as the film can be confusing to certain audiences.
